Here are higlights placings at the first Central Ontario Region of Pony Club dressage qualifier for the Central Canadian Zone Dressage Championships, held on Sunday, May 2, hosted by the Kawartha Pony Club. Some classes had both Pony Club members and non-members competing but they were scored separately and only Pony Club results are reported here. Selection for the Central Ontario Dressage team, which will compete against teams from the Western Ontario and St. Lawrence-Ottawa Valley Regions, will be based on scores achieved at this meet and other qualifiers hosted by the Oshawa Pony Club on June 20, and by the Victoria Pony Club on July 11. This year, the Central Canadian Zone Championships are being hosted by the St. Lawrence-Ottawa Valley Region on August 26-29.
Detailed placings follow these highlights.
At the highest level for this show, Fourth Level Test 1, the winner was Megan Mattos of the Waussnodae Pony Club riding Freddy the Freak. This pair also won the Third Level Test 2 class.
There were no Second Level classes contested at this show.
First Level Division B Tests 3 and 4 were both won by Julie Pett of the Victoria Pony Club, riding Living Legacy.
First Level A Test 1 was won by Johanna McKeen of the Oshawa Pony Club riding Millgate Braveheart, with Julia McGill of the Durham Pony Club second on D'Artagnan and Kaley Fountain of the Victoria Pony Club third on Thunder. In the First Level A Test 2 class, Mlles. McGill and McKeen exchanged orders of finish, with Ms. Fountain again third.
Callie Evans of the Kawartha Pony Club was the winner of the Training Level Test 2 competition on Roxy, with Erin Blakeley of the Toronto & North York Pony Club second riding Thunder Wings, and Michaela Brown of Kawartha third riding Stardust. In the Training Level Test 1 class, Jessie Ball of the Victoria Pony Club took the honours aboard Corona's Kiowa. Jennifer McKeen of the Oshawa Pony Club finished second riding Colwyn Tegan, and Katelyn Powell of the Durham Pony Club was third on Sundance.
The Pre-Training Test 2 class was won by Stephanie Rutherford riding Royal Court Jester. Second place went to Kylie Figueira of the Victoria Pony Club, aboard Baltimore. In third place was Roberta Spratt of the Kawartha Pony Club, on Mr. Teds.
In the Pre-Training Level Test 1 class, Roberta Spratt took top honours, with Katie Stephenson of the Maple Pony Club second on Faolin Ruadh. Third place went to Christy Chamney of the Maple Pony Club riding My Turn.
The two Starter Levels classes were so large that they were split and two sets of ribbons were awarded. In Starter Test 2, Group 1, there was a first place tie between Roberta Spratt and Melanie Grant of the Uxbridge-Scugog Pony Club. Ms. Grant was riding Silver Edition. Third place went to another Uxbridge-Scugog entry, Jade Stalk riding Lu Lu Lemonous. The Starter Test 2 Group 2 competition was won by Hannah Galway of the Maple Pony Club riding Phineas, with Erin Thompson of the Oshawa Pony Club second on Lily, and Sarah Cowie of the new King Pony Club third on Majestic General.
Jodi Hunsley of the Durham Pony Club won the Starter Test 1, Group 1 class riding Kenny. Roberta Spratt and Mr. Teds took second spot, with Melanie Grant and Silver Edition third. In the Starter Test 1, Group 2 class, the winner was Sophie Kalpin of the Maple Pony Club aboard Shimmer, with Mallory Black of King second on Lief Alaric, and Hanna Galway third.
In the Entry Level Test 2 class, the winner was Nikki Ince of the King Pony Club riding T.C. In second place was Rebecca Adrian of the Durham Pony Club riding Narhan's Gift, with Alexandra Sprague of the Uxbridge-Scugog Pony Club third aboard Ponch.
Ms. Ince and T.C. also won the Entry Level Test 1, with Maddy Lang of the King Pony Club second riding Fat Chance, and Sarah Smith of the Maple Pony Club third on Tootles.
New this year were two Medal Division classes, Equitation and Suitability. In these classes, all the entries are in the ring at the same time, and follow instructions called to them. Medal Equitation is judged mainly on the rider, Medal Suitability mainly on the horse or pony. Johanna McKeen and Millgate Braveheart finished first in both classes and took the gold medal. In the Equitation class, second place went to Callie Evans and Roxy, with Charlotte Buffet of the Maple Pony Club in third riding Dillon. In the Suitability Class, Michaela Brown and Stardust were second, and Alexandra Reynolds of the Kawartha Pony Club was third on She's Like the Wind. Combining scores from both classes, the silver medal went to Callie Evans and the bronze to Michaela Brown.
This show offered several freestyle classes, which feature dressage performed to music.
In the First Level Freestyle class, the winner was Johanna McKeen, with second place going to Julia McGill of the Durham Pony Club riding D'Artagnan.
In the Training Freestyle class, Jennifer McKeen took first place, with Jessie Ball second and Andrea McGill of the Durham Pony Club third on Phoenix Rising.
Emily Boyce won the Starter Freestyle class on Faolin Ruadh, with second place going to Charlotte Buffet and Dillon, and third place to Claire Gillies and Touch the Sky. All these entries were from the Maple Pony Club.
Maple also swept the Pas de Deux competition, with the team of Kyra Holmes on Mystic and Sophie Kalpin on Shimmer taking first place. Second went to the team of Jenny Isaacs on Vincent Van Go Go and Samantha Galway on Barbie Girl.
The new King Pony Club sent out two Quadrille teams, one at the Starter level and one at the Training level. The Starter team included Maddy Lang on Fat Chance, Mallory Black on Lief Alaric, Laura Fiume on Equus Maximus, Sarah Cowie on Majestic General, Nikki Ince on T.C.and guest Waussnodae rider Megan Mattos on Freddy the Freak. The Training level team had the same members with the exceptions of Maddy Lang and Nikki Ince.
