The Uxbridge-Scugog Pony Club "Fast and Furious" team leaves this week for the Canadian Prince Philip Games "A" Championship in Edmonton. This team won its way to the national championship by beating five other Central Ontario and Western Ontario teams in the Central Canada Zone Championships July 13.
The members of the "Fast and Furious" are Kathleen Barnes, Luke Durward, Kaylin Nauta, Laura Parliament and Madison Reeves, all 13 to 15 years old. They are coached by Lisa Pascoe, 22, who was part of last year's Masters Games Championship team, the Uxbridge-Scugog "Cowboys."
The national championship will be decided by four sets of races, each on a different string of ponies. At this level, all teams ride borrowed ponies, since transporting ponies across the country is impractical. Mounts are normally contributed by the host Region, but if a team from the host Region represents its Zone, its members would not be allowed to ride their own ponies in competition, as this would give them an unfair advantage over the other teams. The teams will switch mounts after every five games.
Competition is set for Sunday, September 4 at Whitemud Equestrian Centre. Teams arrive in Edmonton on Friday, September 2 and have a day to adjust to the change in time zones.
