The Central Ontario Region of Pony Club held its first Prince Philip Games meet of the season on May 13, at Royal Lane Farm between Manilla and Lindsay, just north of Highway 7. Highlight results are shown below with complete order of finish following.
In the A division, the Uxbridge-Scugog "A-Team" placed first, followed by a mixed Rising Star/Victoria team which called itself the "Victorious Rising Stars".
Victoria took first in the B division, with the Rising Star "Thundering Hooves" second and a combined Toronto & North York/Durham team third.
The Uxbridge-Scugog "Royal Lane Rockets" took the honours in the C division, with Temiskaming second and the Simcoe "Rosebuds" in third place. (The "Rosebuds" chose their name at the meet, and the only boy on the team promptly declared himself a thorn.)
In the Masters Games, for players 15 and older, a tie-breaker was needed to decide first and second. The Uxbridge-Scugog "Cowboys" claimed first place, with another Uxbridge-Scugog team, wearing black and white, in second spot and a mixed Uxbridge-Scugog Toronto & North York team, in red and white, third.
The Prince Philip Cup Games are a team competition played by Pony Clubs around the world. Many of the Games require the riders and ponies to run a slalom course around a series of poles from one end of the playing field to the other, where they hand-off something to the next rider on their team. In some races, riders have to vault off of and onto their ponies.
The next meet in the regular season will be June 10, with the Regional Finals on July 1. Points accumulate over the three meets, and competition at all levels is very close. The Regional A level winners go on to play for the Eastern Canadian Championship against teams from the Western Ontario and Saint Lawrence-Ottawa Valley Regions. The two top Eastern Canadian A level teams then play against Western Canadian representatives for the national championship in Alberta North Region (dates still to be set). There is also a National Masters Championship, to be hosted by Nova Scotia this year on August 24-27.
