Kyra Holmes, an 18 year old member of the Maple Pony Club, represented the Central Ontario Region at the National Quiz in Vancouver, over Thanksgiving weekend, placing second in the top A/B level. Kyra, who has just started the Veterinary Tech program at Seneca College, also represented Central Ontario at the National Show Jumping Championships in Nova Scotia over the Labour Day weekend, finishing sixth. Long weekends seem to agree with her.
This was a true national competition, with entries from coast to coast, and in fact two guest teams from the United States Pony Club also took part, at the C level.
The Quiz had three phases: a written test, a visual phase in which contestants had to identify unusual horse-related articles by sight, and a games phase. There was both individual and team competition. Ms Holmes was on a mixed Central Ontario/BC Lower Mainland team, which finished sixth.
The other Central Ontario member of the mixed team was Katherine Earle of the Ajax Pony Club, who was actually the top C-level competitor in the Central Ontario Regional Quiz, but who volunteered to compete at the A/B level nationally. Though Katherine did not win any individual ribbons, she did contribute to the team standing and by all accounts had a great time.
The A/B Individual Champion was Emily Harris, representing the BC Interior and Northern Region. The winning A/B team was from the St. Lawrence-Ottawa Valley Region. The C Individual Champion was Teigen Bond of the Nova Scotia Region, and the winning C team was from the BC Lower Mainland Region.
