On behalf of everyone at Canadian Pony Club, we wish to send our deepest condolences to the Royal family and all of our partners in the British Commonwealth on the passing of Prince Philip at the age of 99.
The Prince Philip Games as well as the Prince Philip Cup (PC UK) are both named after His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He donated the original Prince Philip Cup to the British Pony Club in the 1950's.
The Queen and Prince Philip's children were Pony Club members; Princess Anne, who went on to represent the UK in Eventing at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, achieved her PC B. During his time as a PC dad, Prince Philip observed that many children had invested great time and care into the training of their ponies. In many cases, these ponies were not 'fancy' and consequently would have a harder time at a show picking up decent ribbons, in spite of their great training and obedience. This observation was the seed which started Prince Philip Games, a competition that would reward the training and obedience of these ponies, and the skill and athleticism of the riders, regardless of a pony's price tag.
Many of Prince Philip's grandchildren have also been PC members, including Princess Anne's daughter Zara Phillips, who herself went on to represent the UK in the 2012 London Olympics.
