Tetrathlon

Tetrathlon is a discipline of Pony Club that includes the sports of riding, running, shooting and swimming. It is based on Olympic Modern Pentathlon, which includes the four Tetrathlon sports plus fencing.

Members must be well-rounded athletes in addition to being capable riders to excel in Tetrathlon.

The riding phase usually takes place over fixed cross country fences however, arena jumping can be used as a substitute.
Where possible Tetrathlon courses always include a gate to open and close whilst mounted, and a slip rail at which the competitor dismounts, takes down the rail, leads his pony or horse through, replaces the rail and remounts.
The riding phase is scored similar to the cross country and stadium jumping phases of rally, with penalty points deducted for refusals, falls and time penalties

In the running phase the runners go cross country. Depending on their level they will run somewhere between 1 and 3 km.

The shooting phase uses any make of single shot 4.5mm calibre air pistol and Pony Club Targets. Competitors each have 5 shots fired consecutively with a time limit of 4 seconds per shot at each target. There is a maximum of 2 targets per competition.

During the swimming phase competitors swim for up to 4 minutes and are scored according to the distance they swam in that time frame.

Alberta South Region used to have a strong Tetrathlon presence. Members have represented Alberta and Canada at both National and International Tetrathlon competitions in the past.
